FOR MORE UP-TO-DATE INFORMATION ON OPENING SCHEDULES, PLEASE CALL THE FOREST SERVICE OFFICE IN SILVERTHORNE - 970-468-5400.
March 2008 - We just received the following letter from the Dillon Ranger District:
The Dillon Ranger District is seeking to increase the camping fees at
the Green Mountain Reservoir / Cataract Recreation complex. The
campgrounds in this complex are Prairie Point, McDonald Flats, Cow Creek
South, Cow Creek North, Willows, Elliot Creek, and Cataract Creek.
Trailheads include Cataract Lake Loop, Surprise, and Eaglesmere.
The fee to use the area has been for the last 10 years, $5 per vehicle,
for both day use (fishing, picnicking, etc.) and camping. The season
pass (unlimited use throughout the season) has been $25. The district
is proposing to increase the fees to $10 per vehicle for camping and the
season pass to $65. The fee for day use would remain the same ($5).
In 2006, the district completed a recreation management plan. Numerous
issues relating to public safety and facility management were addressed.
A fee increase has been proposed to fund the resources needed to deal
with a long history of rule violations (such as dogs off leash, loud
late night parties, OHVs ridden through campsites, and fee payment
non-compliance) and to operate the sites at an appropriate level (such
as cleaning toilets at least once a day, digging out firepits when full,
and picking up litter from campsites). Additionally, some new rules
were proposed to deal with safety issues: Fire pans and portable
camping toilets required where these facilities are not provided.
The District has tried to provide the necessary services with the
revenue collected, however, at the current rate, only three full time
seasonal employees and one part-time employee could be hired to work the
camping season (May through September). At lease two more employees
are needed to provide 7-day per week coverage. Without the fee
increase, the District is providing a low level of customer service.
Additionally, the Distinct had hoped to generate about $10,000 per year
to improve facilities (e.g. new toilets, firepits, etc.).
Please see the attached recreation management plan if you need more
details. (See attached file: GmrFINAL.doc)
The Colorado Recreation Resource Advisory Committee (RRAC) is a
citizen's advisory committee that makes recommendations on creating new
or changing existing recreation fees managed by the US Forest Service.
This committee will evaluate the fee increase proposal for the Green
Mountain Reservoir / Cataract Recreation Complex in April.
How can you help: To demonstrate general local support, I need letters
from individuals and organizations in Summit County who support the
efforts of the Dillon Ranger District to raise the camping fees.
Generally, the public supports camping fees as long as they result in
improved services and facilities (which we plan to do). Please send a
letter or e-mail addressed to me no later than March 12. I will be out
of town until then so if you have any questions, please contact Howard
Scott, Dillon Ranger District Developed Recreation Technician if you
have any questions. hscott@fs.fed.us or 970262-3442. If you feel
uncomfortable with this request, I understand if you cannot help.
Thanks.
